Peace Trust implemented the Prevention from Parent To Child Transmission under the GFATM Round II for Private Hospitals for the duration of 1.4.2005 to 31.1.2007 with the generous assistance of TANSACS, Chennai .

           In Tirunelveli District it is observed that nearly 60% of deliveries are conducted in the Govt.Hospitals and the remaining 40% deliveries have taken place in the Private Hospitals located in Tirunelveli District.

           During the implementation of the project we covered 71 Private Hospitals in the 9 blocks of Tirunelveli district where more numbers of deliveries are conducted. During the initial phase of the project a meeting was conducted for the doctors from the private hospitals and later a one day training to private hospital nurses and lab technicians was arranged and about the importance of the PPTCT programme and services available with Peace Trust regarding the PPTCT programme such as Pre test counseling services, Provision of HIV testing kits to Lab technicians to identity the HIV +ve free cost, Post test counseling services, NVP tablet& NVP syrup for the use of infected mothers.

           Because of our trainings conducted and frequent motivation Annai Velankanni Nursing home a 100 bedded Maternity Hospital, Tirunelveli, Jeba Hospital , and NGO Colony, Dr. Sudhammal Hospital Gopala Samudram has promised to conduct safe delivery for +ve mothers by using the disposable delivery kits provided and the NVP tablet and NVP syrup which was supplied by us.

           The trained 71 private hospital's Lab technicians were asked to draw blood samples from all the ANC mothers who visit their hospitals after Pre test counseling and the samples were taken by our Out Reach Workers to our ICTC for testing. The identified +ve mothers were provided with Post Test counseling by our Counsellor and necessary follow up until delivery and PNC were provided by our GFATM PPTCT field staff. In addition to this great effort we have trained 9 beedi Workers Welfare Hospital 's Doctors, Pharmacists, Staff Nurses, Lab technicians and other hospital staffs under the PPTCT GFATM project.

           Thus we have covered the deliveries that have occurred in the private hospital as well as the special hospitals for the unorganized sector workers also. Our services under PPTCT, GFATM Round II has been stopped on 31.1.2007 without proper notice or intimation to us though we were in the process to motivate more Hospitals and Nursing Homes to conduct deliveries in a Non discriminatory manner for HIV positive mothers

           Now the deliveries that have occurred in the private hospitals are left out from the PPTCT services and in many cases their status is also not known . So the ANC mothers seeking medical service from the Private Hospitals are omitted from the PPTCT services like provision of NVP tablets and NVP syrup and HIV testing to know their status.

           It is a great regret to miss the +ve ANC mothers since 40% of the total delivers are occurred in PNH/ Hospitals of Tirunelveli District with out knowing their HIV status. If this programme is again implemented surely the further spread from vertical transmission can be stopped among the ANC positive mothers.
